The Instrument Rating is the perfect next step for someone with a private pilot license. Not only does it allow you to fly in less-than-perfect weather, getting your instrument rating gives you a great new set of skills and helps bring your piloting skills to a new level. All of our instructors have instrument-instructor ratings and are seasoned by hours of actual IFR flying.
Our fleet of rental aircraft are IFR certified and features the C172SP, a terrific IFR platform with color moving map GPS and 3-axis autopilot. If you’re going to be flying in New England, you’re going to want your instrument rating. We can do it over time on your schedule, but also offer an intensive accelerated instrument rating.
If an aviation career is your goal, we can also help you with your Commercial Rating. Our experienced instructors have trained numerous pilots for advanced ratings and have the experience and wisdom to help you become a professional.
While it’s hard to find these days, Southern Maine Aviation, LLC has a tailwheel airplane for rent and instruction. Earning your Tailwheel Endorsement is a huge accomplishment, and we guarantee it will make you a better pilot. Best of all, flying taildraggers is just plain fun. We think so, and we think you’ll agree. 
Tailwheel endorsements typically take anywhere from 5 to 15 hours. A checkout in our Citabria Explorer is a bit more involved than just a tailwheel endorsement. We want you to be comfortable under a wide variety of experiences before we let you loose to explore New England. We'll take you around to some of the area's trickier airports and show you some of our favorite spots. Expect another 5-10 hours or more of fun dual.
